If you’ve lost one or more teeth in a row and are eager to fill the gap in your grin, you might be a good candidate for a dental bridge. These prosthetics contain the correct number of pontics, or artificial teeth, in between two dental implants. They anchor to healthy abutment teeth or dental implants on either side of the space in your smile.

When considering different restorations, it’s natural to want to know how long they last so you can make an informed decision. Continue reading to learn more about the anticipated longevity of dental bridges and how you can preserve their condition!

How Long Will My Dental Bridge Last?

There is no universal answer to this question because several variables can impact the lifespan of your dental bridge. For example, they can be fixed or removable, altering their expected timeframe. They can also be made from different materials, like tooth-colored porcelain or metal, which lasts longer but is less visually appealing.

Below, we explore more detailed information for each type of dental bridge to give you a better idea of what to expect:

Removable Bridges

These restorations have dental crowns on each end that rely on healthy teeth in your mouth as an anchor. For these to fit correctly, your dentist must remove a thin layer of enamel so they don’t appear overly bulky next to your remaining pearly whites.

Removable prosthetics like these typically rely on metal clips to grasp the abutment teeth on either side of the gap in your grin to remain firmly in place. They typically last 5 to 7 years, and you’ll have to remove them twice daily to thoroughly brush and floss them to avoid oral issues like gum disease.

Fixed Bridges

Fixed bridges also contain two dental crowns on each end, but instead of clipping to abutment teeth, these are permanently cemented over them. Many patients prefer this method because they don’t have to struggle with frequently removing and reinserting their prosthetics. This also allows for a firmer foundation that is less likely to become loose or dislodged during a meal or conversation. They usually last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, based on how well they’re maintained.

Implant Bridges

These are the same as fixed bridges, but instead of anchoring to supporting teeth, they will attach to metal rods surgically placed directly into your jawbone. Once you’ve had your initial procedure, the support poles will fuse with your jawbone over a period of 6 to 12 weeks as you recover. Dental implants are known to stick around for 30+ years, so they can potentially last the remainder of your natural life!

To keep your artificial teeth looking and feeling great, you should brush and floss twice daily as usual. Also, remember to schedule a routine checkup and cleaning with your dentist every six months so they can treat any areas of concern, like a damaged bridge, before they progress.
